It’s only natural to want to grow within your career. After all, no one wants to feel stuck in a role or position that isn’t going anywhere.

As you move through your career you should always be preparing for the next stage. But without a huge win at work, it can sometimes feel like you’ve come to a bit of a stand-still.

So how do you make sure you’re always advancing and preparing for the next stage of your career? Below we outline five ways you can progress and grow within your current role.

1. Keep learning

No matter what stage you’re at in your career, it always pays to keep learning! Whether that’s taking training and development courses or just reading up on your industry, it’s important that you keep adding to your expertise.

What’s more, in any role, it’s important that you stay on top of the latest trends to ensure you’re able to come up with the most creative and innovative ideas.

2. Use your time effectively

This applies to both inside and outside of work hours, but doesn’t mean you should be working 24/7! This means managing your workload, but also using your down time to relax, unwind or get involved in personal projects that you enjoy.

Work-life balance is important to ensure you’re working at maximum productivity during the working day. Get this right and you’ll prove that you can manage your work, but also enjoy your free time.

Immersing yourself in out of hours projects can be extremely beneficial for boosting your career. Particularly if they are related to your chosen field and contribute to your end career goal.

3. Network

A great way to grow in your career is by networking. This can be with people inside and outside of work. And there are a number of ways you can do this.

You might choose to attend industry events, join online forums, or use professionals networking sites like LinkedIn.

Getting to know people in your field, or in related industries can be beneficial throughout your career. You never know when they may approach you with an exciting opportunity or vice-versa.

Building a strong network means you’ll surround yourself with like-minded professionals who can keep you updated on the latest news, alert you to new roles or provide you with fresh ideas.

4. Use your initiative

One of the best ways to get recognised is by using your initiative and going the extra mile. If you see a job that needs doing, don’t wait to be asked – just do it!

What’s more, if you feel like you’re ready to take the next step, don’t wait for your boss to tell you. Instead, speak to them about taking on new responsibilities or stepping up in your role.

In doing so, you’ll prove that not only do you not need to be micro-managed, but that you’re more than capable of managing your work and taking on new tasks. This will show your worth and demonstrate what a great contribution you’re making to the business.

5. Find a mentor

Whether a family member, co-worker or friend, finding someone that can support you and your career goals can work wonders. They’ll not only help you progress, but they’ll be there to motivate you.

And this is a two-way street – you’ll also be there to help them when they need it. Creating a professional but inspiring relationship can be the perfect way to boost your career.

In summary

No one wants to feel stuck in a rut – especially when it comes to their career! These are just a number of the small steps you can take to prepare for moving forward. Follow our tips above and you’ll be ready to move on to the next stage of your career when the time comes.
