5 reasons to consider Supply Teaching

With more and more teachers making the change from permanent to supply teaching, most are wondering why this has become so popular in recent years? There are several reasons and benefits to explain this change, but quite simply, it is because supply teaching offers several advantages that a permanent position cannot.

Of course, supply teaching may not be for everybody but if you are looking for more flexibility and better work-life balance, this may be the route for you.

Supply teaching is a great option for all sorts of professionals, whether you are newly qualified and wanting to experience a few different schools before going permanent, or you’re retired and looking for fewer responsibilities but still want to share your knowledge and passion in the classroom!

As we know, many schools appreciate and are reliant on supply teachers either at short notice for sickness cover or longer term to cover maternity leave etc. So, we decided to ask some of our very own supply teachers on why they love their job. Here’s what they said...

  1.        Flexibility

The flexibility of supply teaching is one of the most attractive attributes of the job. As a supply teacher, you have the flexibility to decide when and where you want to work, completely hassle free.

Alongside that, say goodbye to peak time holidays and overcrowded resorts! As a supply teacher you'll be completely free to decide when you want to take time off, and for regular holiday lovers, this could be extremely beneficial.

  1.        Return to teaching

If you have taken some time out of teaching for whatever reason, it may be a daunting thought to jump straight back into something on a permanent basis. Teaching on a supply basis could get you back up to date with developments in the curriculum and could be a great way to ease you back into the profession.

And you never know, along the way you might find a school that’s perfect for you; supply teaching can often lead to extended contracts and permanent roles offered!

  1.        Relocation

Moving to a new area can be a big enough pressure as it is, and the added pressure of finding the right school is something that can be overwhelming and definitely avoided! With supply teaching, you can 'try before you buy' and get to know the schools in your local area before settling down somewhere.

  1.        Variety

Another great reason to become a supply teacher is that you can experience new sectors within education, for example, if you’ve always wanted to work with SEN students then this could be the perfect opportunity. Or say you wanted to work in an independent school or would even like to try covering more lessons of a subject you’ve always been interested in but never had a chance to take on full time, then supply could also be a good option.
